Property Taxes

PROPERTY TAX INFORMATION

  • Summer property taxes are mailed on or before July 1st and winter property tax bills are mailed on or before December 1st each year.
  • Summer tax payments will not be accepted or receipted until July 1st and winter tax payments will not be accepted or receipted until December 1st each year,
  • The summer statement includes Wayne County operating taxes and the City of Grosse Pointe Park’s property taxes only, which are payable to the city without interest on or before August 31st,
  • Summer tax bills that are unpaid as of August 31st will receive an additional one percent (1%) interest penalty to be added to the unpaid balance on September 1st with an additional one percent (1%) each month, on the first of the month thereafter, for as long as the bill remains past due. 
  • The winter statement includes taxes for the school district, Wayne County parks and jail, Huron Clinton Metro Authority, Wayne County Community College, the Regional Educational Service Agency (RESA), and the library. These taxes are payable without penalty, on or before February 14,
  • An additional three percent (3%) interest penalty is added on past due taxes on February 15th each year,
  • Failure to receive a tax bill does not waive interest or penalty.

  • The city currently accepts Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover card.
  • Taxpayers may also use a VISA or Mastercard Debit credit card online to make payment.
  • All credit card service fees are the responsibility of the cardholder.

BILL PAYMENT OPTIONS
U.S. MAIL

  • POSTMARKS ARE NOT ACCEPTED.
  • Payments must be received for the summer tax bill by August 31st and winter by February 14th at the City Hall to be considered paid timely.
  • Include payment coupon(s) for each tax bill being paid,
  • Use the envelope provided,
  • For property tax payments, write the tax season, S for Summer and W for Winter along with the parcel ID number on your check when paying taxes,
  • Include the account # found on the invoice for water/sewer bill payments,
  • Place the invoice # on your check for all other payments,
  • Check payable to City of Grosse Pointe Park,
  • Allow ample time for postal delivery as the City is not responsible for delay’s in mail service from the U.S. Post Office,

ONLINE PAYMENT THROUGH YOUR BANK
When using a banking institutions online bill payment option, a separate payee must be set up for each payment type,
When paying a tax bill, for the account number please use the season and property tax identification number found on the bottom right of the tax bill.

    • Example, summer tax account number looks like    “S 39 ### ## #### ###”
    • Example, winter taxes account number looks like “W 39 ### ## #### ###
  • All payment option mailing addresses should use the City Hall’s mailing address at 15115 E. Jefferson Ave, Grosse Pointe Park, MI 48230
  • All payments must be made to the “City of Grosse Pointe Park.”
  • Please allow ample time for postal delivery for these paper checks being issued by your bank.
  • You are responsible for any past due interest or service fee charges for payments received after the due date.

OFFICIAL DROP BOXES LOCATED AT CITY HALL

  • Personal check or cashier’s check only,
  • The brown drop-box located outside the City Hall, labeled “No U.S. Mail” with a sign indicating the location to drop city water payments, tax payments, and all other payable violations is found in front of the mail City Hall door at the end of parking circle.
  • The walkup black box, found inside of the mail City Hall lobby at the base of the stairs is labeled “ALL CITY BUSINESS” can also be used as a payment drop off location, while the main lobby doors are open to the public.
  • Payments in the Official City Drop Boxes before 8:00am on the business day following August 31st are considered on time.
  • The city hall will be closed in observance of both the Christmas and New Years Holidays,
  • Residents wishing to make payments during observed holidays while the city hall is closed may use either the outside drop box or the drop box inside the City Hall office vestibule.
  • Payments in the Official City Drop Boxes before 8:00 a.m. on the first business day the City Hall resumes business hours following December 31st are posted as paid on December 31st for income tax purposes,
  • Payments in the Official City Drop Boxes before 8:00am on the business day following February 14th are considered on time.
  • All payments received after 8:00 a.m. on September 1st, January 2nd, or February 15th will be posted on the day the payment is received on September 1st, January 2nd, and February 15th and will be subject to interest or penalty per the statute.

IN PERSON - TREASURER'S OFFICE AT CITY HALL

  • Regular Office hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (except holidays). 
  • Please bring the entire invoice bill statement when making payment,
  • For safety and efficiency, payment by check, cashier’s check, or credit card is preferred.


RECEIPT OPTIONS
CLEARED CHECK

  • If making payment by personal check, the cleared check, which can be viewed/printed from your bank’s website, is always the best receipt, as it is proof that the funds were successfully transferred from your account to the city’s account.
  • Posted tax payment information can also be found by visiting the property information on the City’s website.

MAILED RECEIPT

  • Taxpayers that wish to pay by mail and wish to request a paid receipt must provide a self-addressed postmarked or stamped envelope with the entire tax bill.
  • The top portion of the tax bill will be marked “PAID” and mailed back to the taxpayer.
  • Taxpayers may also place a post marked or stamped envelope in one of the Official Drop Boxes at City Hall with their entire tax bill and payment, to be marked as “PAID” and returned in the mail.

CURRENT & DELINQUENT PROPERTY TAX INFORMATION
Payment for the current property taxes between July 1st and February 28th each year must be made payable to the City of Grosse Pointe Park no later than August 31st.  If the due date falls on a weekend or holiday, the due date will be moved to the following business date before interest penalties apply.

  • All unpaid real property taxes are transferred to the Wayne County Treasurer each tax year, on or by March 1st with additional interest and penalties.
  • To pay past due taxes contact, please contact the Wayne County Treasurer’s office at (313) 224-5990. To find or pay past due tax transferred to Wayne County online, visit their website at  Pay Taxes Online | Treasurer (waynecounty.com)
  • All prior or past delinquent Personal Property tax bills are to be paid or remitted to the City of Grosse Pointe Park’s Treasury Office.

SUMMER TAX DEFERMENT
Senior citizens, who are eligible for a summer tax deferment, providing additional time to pay taxes without interest penalty, may fill out and submit the Deferment Form on or before September 15 at City Hall to defer City taxes until February 14 without penalty.

For County and School taxes, eligible seniors may fill out an additional form at City Hall prior to February 14th, to defer County and School taxes without penalty up through April 30. Those payments are then made to the Wayne County Treasurer. For additional information regarding taxes, please contact the Treasurer’s office at 313-822-6200.

The Summer Tax Deferment extends the due date for the summer taxes to February 14th, for eligible individuals.  To qualify, your household income must not exceed $40,000, and you must meet one of the following requirements:

  • 62 years of age or older,
  • Paraplegic, hemiplegic or quadriplegic,
  • Totally and permanently disabled or blind,
  • Eligible service Person, veteran, eligible widow or widower.

Persons eligible for deferment of summer taxes may get an application by clicking the link below, or by calling the Treasurer’s Office at 313-822-6200 to request a copy be mailed. 

All applications must be signed by the principal resident (Owner) qualifying for the exemption or by their power of attorney. 

The completed application, along with a copy of your previous year’s Homestead Property Tax Credit Form, must be received in the Treasurer's Office no later than September 15th.

  • The tax law holds the homeowner responsible for property tax payment.  If any changes are made with a lending institution, follow-up to verify that the taxes have been paid – see bullet point above: “To print a tax bill, and/or verify that a tax payment has been made:”
