Public Works

The Department of Public Works is located at 1005 Wayburn (off Jefferson on Wayburn).  The hours of operation are 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.  The DPW is responsible for maintenance of city streets, sidewalks, and general cleaning of the city. Fall Leaf Collection
Please utilize curbside leaf pick up instead of compost bags. This will keep compost bag pick up to a minimum and save money and time. Curbside collection will take place from October until December (weather permitting). Leaves will not be picked up with branches, sod, dirt, brush or rubbish debris mixed in.
Snow Removal
Streets are our #1 priority during snow events.  Due to the cost of salt, the DPW will be spot salting at intersections and mid-way on all streets. During accumulating snow, streets will be salted and plowing will take place when accumulation is 3 inches or greater. Please do not snow blow or shovel snow back into the street.  We do appreciate your help on this issue.
SIDEWALKS:  As a service to homeowners, snow and ice is cleared from sidewalks.  In the event that snowfall is very limited or ice build-up occurs, residents are asked to clear their sidewalks within 12 hours of such occurrences.
SNOW REMOVAL BY CONTRACTORS:  It is the Contractor’s  responsibility to push the snow they are plowing back onto the homeowner’s property not the neighbor’s property.  The Police Department will issue tickets to Contractor’s who violate this policy. 
The Water Board is also part of the DPW, and handle all water main repairs as well as the installation and repair of water meters, the reading of water meters for billing and water shut off due to repairs.
Park Activity since September 2016 Storm Event
The City of Grosse Pointe Park and Stantec, the City’s engineering firm has been diligently working to explore all methods of reducing inflow to the Jefferson/Sanitary system, upgrade capacity and handling emergency events. Further undertakings by the City will be periodically posted on the City wesbite. 
The transformers and switch gear have been replaced, upgraded and moved to the top floor of the Jefferson pump station. Public Works has been working on plugging manhole covers that are missing plugs and will soon begin sealing catch basins. Stantec and the City are planning Fog/Smoke testing on the North side of Jefferson this summer, additional details to follow.
In November of 2016, the City and Stantec Engineers began to conduct Fog/Smoke testing City streets south of Jefferson. The purpose of this test was to identify sources of rainwater inflow and infiltration to the sanitary sewer system and identify methods to remove excess wet weather flows from the sewer system. In early December the testing was postponed with the incoming winter season until spring. However with the abnormal winter the Park experienced in January the City restarted the Fog/Smoke Testing and finished in the 1st week of February.  Footing, driveway, backyard drains and connected downspouts to the Jefferson/Sanitary system all contribute to increased flow within the sanitary system. The City has found throughout the Fog/Smoke testing there are sources of inflow contributing to the Jefferson/Sanitary system. Residents with inflow contributors have been notified by the City on how to disconnect. With residents disconnecting inflow contributors from the Jefferson/Sanitary system this will help reduce the burden on the station.

  • On average a household wastewater flow equals to about 145 to 175 gallons per day
  • Typical rooftop runoff volume for a 1,500 square foot roof with downspout connections from a 1 inch rain event equals approximately 1,000 gallons
  • Typical sump pump flow is approximately 2,400 gallons per hour
Stantec recommends a number of solutions residents can take to reduce impact
  • Install residential backwater valves
  • Install sump pump for footer tiles
  • Install ejector pump for basement waste drains
  • Disconnect remaining downspouts & extend others away from foundations
