Reimagining Charlevoix Street

The Charlevoix Streetscape project is a joint effort between the City of Grosse Pointe Park and the City's Tax Increment Finance Authority (TIFA). The project involves the complete reconstruction and reimagining of Charlevoix street from the western city limits to Beaconsfield Avenue. Conceptual engineering and initial community engagement occurred in 2023 and 2024. The City was successfully awarded a $1.8 million grant from the State of Michigan to go towards the construction of the project. In additional to the various placemaking elements (street lighting, curbless street, and green infrastructure and landscaping) a new water main will be installed along with various repairs to the storm sewer systems in the project area.

November 2025 UPDTATE: The Charlevoix Streetscape project has reached final design and has been submitted to the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), the administrator of the grant, for final review and acceptance. The project is anticipated to be advertised to contractors around the new year with contractor selection in January or February. Construction is scheduled from mid-April to late-September 2026. The road will be closed to vehicles and constructed in two segments, Alter to Lakepointe first and then Lakepointe to Beaconsfield. When one segment is closed, the other will be open. Though closed to vehicles, the sidewalks will be open at all times to access businesses. On-street parking will be maintained outside of work zones. A pre-construction public meeting will be held in the Spring to help raise awareness and answer questions from the public and businesses.

The Charlevoix Water Main construction, funded from the Infrastructure Millage, is wrapping up now with the bulk of construction complete. The asphalt patches on the street and sidewalk will remain through the winter until the streetscape construction begins.

Coordination with the City of Detroit and DTE is ongoing. The portion nearest Alter is within the City of Detroit and final permitting approval is pending. DTE will need to relocate five streetlights, portions of their gas distribution main, and oversee the electrical service. These matters are on schedule.
